I consider myself a loving and dedicated father and I try to help my kids with their homework whenever I can. This week my daughter had a very unusual assignment that made me read about ink. Well of course I did not have to help but she wanted someone to fact check her paper for her and, you know, a dad has to know everything (or at least appear to).
Apparently the ink that is used in printers like our ink jet printer in my office is not the same stuff as the ink that is used in artwork. Most fine artists who work with ink choose an ink that is actually a dye: that is, dyes of various colors are mixed into water until they are the right tone and that is the ink. If you see Japanese silk paintings or original artwork for comic books, this is probably what you are seeing. Dye does not sit on the page like paint, it soaks right into it. This means it does not cover the texture of the surface it is on, and it is very fluid on the brush which allows for beautiful brush strokes.
However that is not ideal for printing and copying. Because dye soaks into the page it can sometimes bleed. In a printer that would result in a fuzzy image, so pigment based ink is used instead. These inks have actual pigment particles mixed into them, which do settle on the page like a micro layer of paint.

Do you think a guy is a geek just because he goes to a computer fair? A while back I saw the LA Computer Fair on lacomputerfair.com and decided I wanted to go. All of my friends started giving me a hard time for it! I just think of myself as a smart shopper, but if that makes me a geek then I guess I am guilty as charged.
I had never been to a computer fair before, but I am the type who always does a lot of research before buying anything expensive. I am the kind of guy who has stacks of old Consumer Reports on his desk just in case they ever come in handy. If I am going to buy a car or a smart phone I will spend weeks hunting through reviews and articles before I even go see a sales person. And computers are expensive, why would it not be a good policy to do the same with them?
So when I went to the LA Computer Fair it was mainly to do research. I have a working laptop but it is getting older and I know I will need to upgrade to something better soon. Might as well get a head start on the research, right? I found out that there are a lot of different companies exhibiting there. Most of the guys were extremely knowledgeable and could really tell me about the machines they had out.

Okay, after years of evidence I have to go ahead and admit it: I am a magnet for printer problems. I honestly feel like printers just hate me personally. I know they are not alive but I think when no one is looking they come to life and have secret meetings to decide how to mess up my work projects.
So the other day I was coming down to deadline on this major project. I was only working on one part of it, a set of notes and charts that needed to be in packets at a meeting with clients. Boring I know, but of course it all has to be perfect or my boss will fly off the handle.
Everything went just fine until it was time to send the final version to the color printer. We have just one color printer in our office, because nobody but me uses color much. Of course this machine is in on the printers evil plot to get me fired. Anyway, I send the project, run over to the printer, and find
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I do not mean there was a jam or something – I mean there was no print out, no error message, no jam, no sign of any activity at all. I ran back to my computer thinking I had failed to send it, but it was sent to the printer. Chewing my lip, I tried sending the job again. Same result (which is to say, no result at all). In the end I had to take the file to a print shop to get it done in time, but now I am convinced there is a ghost in the printer eating my work.

Seriously guys, I know that some people go to Youtube for how to videos (I usually go there just to look at funny cats myself), and refilling a toner cartridge might require a how to like anything else. But the number of people refilling on Youtube is getting a little mind boggling. I mean is this a subject that people really need that much assistance with? I do not know, but when I saw how many of these videos there are I had chuckle to myself.
I know that there are a lot of weird things out there on Youtube. There are other phenomena I do not get too. There is a growing movement where women who come home from shopping like to make a video of taking everything out of their shopping bags and talking about what they paid for it (even just simple things like groceries). To me that is weird but I can kind of get it because it is a social thing for them. But toner refills?
I had to see what the deal was so I watched a few. Obviously many of them are made by toner companies so I suppose that, in some form, it is marketing. However I was actually surprised that these videos are not strictly how-tos, they also give tips on saving money on your printing. That is actually pretty useful.
